We want Bristol to be a city where hard of hearing (hearing loss) people can go out without worrying if they’ll hear what’s going on.
By joining our Patreon, you help us visit local bars, cafés, restaurants and community spaces, check how friendly they are for people with hearing loss, and share real‑time vlogs and posts from the community.
The Hearing Loss Gold Standard for Venues
We’re creating a simple Hearing Loss Gold Standard – a checklist of what makes a venue genuinely accessible for people with hearing loss. A Gold Standard venue will:
- Hearing loop & telecoil ready: Has a correctly installed hearing loop in key areas like counters, meeting spaces and performance areas.
- Trained, confident staff: Staff know the loop exists, how to switch it on, and use basic deaf‑aware communication (like PACE: Patience, Attention, Clarity, Ear contact).
- Hearing loss-friendly environment: Good lighting on faces, thoughtful control of background noise, and clear information for visitors.
Community reviews – building the Bristol Hearing Loss Map
With Patreon support, we’ll visit venues across Bristol, rate them against the Hearing Loss Gold Standard, and log results on an online Bristol Hearing Loss Map so people can quickly see where loops work, where staff are deaf‑aware, and where the environment makes life easier.
Hearing Loss Gold Standard Audit
Once we’ve built up real data, we can offer venues a paid, on‑site assessment to show them exactly what they can do to meet our Gold Standard, including a practical report on what’s good, what needs improvement, and priority actions.
