workJob Interviews & Workplace Advice
Navigating job applications, disclosure strategies, interview scripts, rights under the Equality Act 2010, corporate cultures, and emotional support in Bristol.
Disclosing hearing loss during job applications is your personal choice under UK law. Disclosing early allows you to request Reasonable Adjustments so you can demonstrate your true skills without communication barriers.
When & How to Disclose:
1. Pre-Interview Adjustment Request
When invited to interview, email HR to request specific setups: a quiet room away from noisy open-plan corridors, written interview questions, live video call captions, or a BSL/Speech-to-Text reporter.
2. At the Start of the Interview
Be positive and proactive. Frame your hearing tactics as strong self-awareness, active listening skills, and clarity-driven communication.
Sample Disclosure Scripts You Can Use:
"Before we begin, I'd like to let you know I have a mild/moderate hearing loss. I lipread alongside hearing aids, so I communicate best when we face each other in a well-lit space and speak one at a time. If I ask you to rephrase a question, it's just to make sure I catch every detail!"
"I use live automatic captions during video calls due to my hearing loss. If audio stutters, I may ask you to type key points or questions into the meeting chat box."
In the UK, hearing loss is protected as a disability under the Equality Act 2010. Employers are legally forbidden from discriminating against job candidates or employees based on hearing loss.
Duty of Reasonable Adjustments
Employers MUST make adjustments to recruitment and workplace environments. This includes providing assistive listening systems, adapted phones, quiet desk positioning, or modified duties.
Access to Work Grant (100% Funded)
A UK government scheme that pays for assistive workplace technology (such as Phonak Roger wireless microphones, captioning software, BSL interpreters, and staff Deaf Awareness training) at zero cost to small businesses!
Navigating hearing loss varies significantly depending on company size and organisational structure:
🏢 Large Corporations & Public Sector (NHS, Councils)
Pros: Formal HR departments, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) policies, Disability Confident badges, established Access to Work processes.
Challenges: Bureaucratic approval chains; large noisy open-plan offices and big conference rooms require strict meeting moderation.
🏪 Small Businesses & Startups
Pros: Direct access to decision-makers, rapid custom desk setups, intimate team communication, high flexibility.
Challenges: HR may be informal or unfamiliar with Equality Act funding. Politely inform them that Access to Work covers funding costs!
Job searching, interview rejection stress, or feeling misunderstood at work can take a heavy toll on your mental wellbeing. You do not have to face communication anxiety alone.
